The road towards valuing diversity

I haven’t been posting lately because I noticed that the views for my blog dropped off sharply in November. I thought that I would post something to see if there is any interest anymore.   In February, Black History Month, we typically see many lists of books about and by blacks, books about black history, and books that support diversity. No doubt you’ve seen many of them already. Here is one that I thought that I would highlight:  https://www.rebekahgienapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/top_diverse_books.pdf The web page has books recommended for various age ranges as well as a brief synopsis of each.   What is interesting is the very last page.   There you will find a list of books that are not recommended.   Undoubtedly, many readers will find some books that they expect to see on the list.   There may be other childhood favourites that are a surprise.   If you click the links for the books, it will take you to another page or website that...

Metadata Update #14 - My Mini MOOC

So lately I've been busy basically taking one Coursera MOOC after the other.  I'm learning a lot and amazed that the quality of classes I am getting for free. So, I put together my own little mini MOOC for folks interested in where the big picutre of data and metadata might be going.  There are no assignments, tests or discussion forums.  Instead, I have put together a collection of videos that you can watch (maybe one a day or one every couple of days) that discuss some of the thinking and technologies that are themes in discussions about where metadata and discovery in libraries are likely going.  I've organized the list from the most wide ranging and general to the most specific and library-related. For the first three videos, I attended these sessions live and I've selected them because they are the best of the type that I have seen yet. For the last 2 BIBFRAME videos, I didn't attend these particular sessions but I attended similar sessions at ALA MidWint...

Metadata Update #32 - Reflections on the status of the metadata librarian

Ever since I had the chance to change my focus in library work 8 years ago, I wanted to be where the action was.   I had spent many years working in public services and had enjoyed doing reference work in the era before people Googled everything.   However, when the reference desk started to get quiet, I knew that it was time to move on.   I didn’t know where I was going to but I knew that I was going to go to a place where I was needed and could help to be part of building whatever the future would be.   I kept my mind open to opportunities and felt that I likely would work in the area of electronic resources or electronic information in general.   When an opportunity came up to develop my skills in the area of cataloguing and metadata librarianship, I jumped on it.   At the time it made sense to me that if people want to do most of their searching for themselves, we have to have better and more agile metadata than we did at the time and I wanted to be...
